There are several ways that you can help Home-Start Isle of Wight in a voluntary capacity:
- by supporting a family as a home-visiting volunteer
- by joining the Management Board
- by helping in our groups
Home-Start Isle of Wight’s home-visiting volunteers come from many different backgrounds and vary in age but all are either parents themselves or have parenting experience and are carefully selected for their friendliness and understanding. All volunteers attend our Volunteer Preparation course which usually runs on a Friday for 8 weeks. They undergo an enhanced police check and provide two references before being matched with a family. They then take their own individual skills and experience to the families they visit.
Once matched volunteers usually support a family once a week for a couple of hours. They provide emotional support, a listening ear, practical help, getting out and about. The support given often helps parents to feel more able to cope.
“The support from Home-Start started me on the road to recovery from agoraphobia and helped me to feel less isolated and lonely. The warmth and friendliness of the volunteer made me see and restored my faith in humanity. It allowed me to find the strength to trust and enjoy other people’s company”.
WE RUN REGULAR VOLUNTEER TRAINING COURSES.
The course usually runs for 4 weeks on a Thursday and Friday from 10am until 2pm, (we would consider running the course on an alternative day, or an evening if there are enough people so please register your interest). It is for anyone who would like to become a volunteer and covers topics such as home-visiting, safeguarding children and confidentiality. The course does not require lots of writing or paperwork.
Volunteering is an excellent way to gain valuable work experience and enhance your cv if you are planning to return to work, or are looking for a change of career.
If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering with us please have a look at our Volunteer Information and Application form (below), or give us a call for an informal chat to find out more. Alternatively, use the ‘contact us’ link below.
Home-Start Isle of Wight’s Management Board is made up of local people from a wide range of backgrounds. The main requirements of a trustee are a real interest in the work we undertake and a willingness to be actively involved in the running of the charity. The Management Board is responsible for the financial security of the organisation and ensures its strong governance.
